If You’re Effective, They Will Be Too

Ever since I read this book a few years ago, I have found Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to be very helpful. It is important for a leader to be in the best shape they can be, mentally and physically. Throughout this book, Covey teaches us 7 habits that help you become more effective, and ultimately help you find success. A great leader will most likely possess and be a master of these 7 habits. Followers will be much more effective when working to accomplish his or her difficult tasks and reach the organization’s goals.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

Habit 1: Be Proactive

Take initiative and responsibility for your own life. Proactive people recognize that they have the ability to choose and act with integrity. They do not blame others for their outcomes.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

Start with a clear image of your goal. This means knowing what your values are and you know your ultimate vision. This way, you are able to know what you are doing each day to contribute to your goals.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

Gain control of time and events by relating them to your goals and by managing your priorities. Focus on relationships and accomplishing results.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

Understand that without cooperation, an organization cannot succeed. Ensure mutual success across the team and allow everyone to come out a winner.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

This is essential to effective communication. A leader needs to possess the quality of listening with the intent to understand. It requires the ability to empathize with the other person’s situation.

Habit 6: Synergize

The most important ability a leader must have. A leader must get people to act together to create solutions and achieve tasks. The best opportunity to synergize is when people have different viewpoints, because they present new opportunities and ideas.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

This is the process of renewal. Each of the previous 6 habits must be constantly practiced. A great leader is always “sharpening the saw” and renewing themselves in order to stay in exceptional mental and physical condition.

It is important that a leader is one who the followers can admire and trust. A highly effective leader is one that has developed themselves to their highest potential. Once a leader knows how to develop themselves, they will be able to help develop their followers.
